Nestled in the heart of Baijia Village, Zhangyan Town, a sprawling public woodland spanning more than 2,000 mu (about 133 hectares) is set to open to visitors, offering a natural retreat where urban residents can reconnect with forests, flowers, and freshwater scenery.
As one of Shanghai’s first open leisure woodlands, the project’s Phase I area of 1,132 mu has already completed its transformation from mere “greening space” to a “livable and enjoyable landscape.” The design thoughtfully incorporates natural water features such as Yulan Lake and Butterfly Bay, which lend soul and serenity to the woodland.
Where once stood monotonous “green walls,” the area is now adorned with cherry blossoms and red maple trees, adding vibrant seasonal character. In spring, the woodland glows with romantic cherry pink; by autumn, it flares up in warm maple red, while the forest floor is dressed in a “floral skirt” of purple rhododendrons and iris.
Phase II of the project, closely connected to the first, expands this lush landscape into a continuous and ecologically rich public woodland. It is expected to be completed this Sunday.
The Phase II upgrade covers 1015 mu and introduces a looped trail system that weaves previously separate sections into a complete slow-traffic ecological network. Visitors will be able to enjoy forest hiking or relaxed cycling amid the refreshed natural surroundings.
